Hard times have fallen on Pacashau, Ga., but the townspeople have faith that the Divinity Church Choir will lift their spirits by winning a national competition. The choir has always made beautiful music, but now, its two leading ladies have hit a sour note. Vi Rose (Queen Latifah) believes that a traditional style is the key to victory, but G.G. (Dolly Parton) thinks tried-and-true means tired-and-old. The two singers must find a harmonious chord or risk losing everything.

Ely Vaughn (Quaid) is a pillar of the community in tiny Smithville, Texas. The town’s mortician, Ely has been revered since his days as the high school’s star quarterback. But since the tragic death of his wife two years earlier, Ely has withdrawn from his neighbors, while local teens spread stories of supernatural goings on at Ely’s mansion—which is also the funeral home. When high school friends Travis (Oller), Abby (Teegarden), Brian (Lunsford) and Danny (Werkheiser) decide to check out the rumors, they are shocked to see the supposedly grieving widower dancing with a mysterious woman behind the curtains of his bedroom window. Their curiosity aroused, the four teens wait for Ely to leave the house before breaking in to investigate. But instead of finding clues to the woman’s identity, they stumble on a grotesque, long-hidden secret. The sadistic mortician next door will now stop at nothing to literally bury his past.

Cast: Dennis Quaid, Aimee Teegarden, Tony Oller, Stephen Lunsford, Devon Werkheiser
Director: Martin Guigui
Genres: Art House/Foreign, Suspense/Thriller

Invented in the 1880s by Henry C. Ramos, in his bar at Meyer’s Restaurant, this is one of New Orleans’ most famous drinks. The secret of its flavor and texture is orange flower water and egg whites. When Huey P. Long was governor of Louisiana he brought with him to New York’s Roosevelt Hotel the bartender from the New Orleans Roosevelt to train the NYC bartenders on how to make a proper Ramos Gin Fizz, just so he could have his beloved New Orleans gin fizzes whenever he was in New York. Yeah, sure, every man a king …

Orange flower water can be difficult to find, but is available in better liquor stores or Middle-Eastern markets. You can mail-order it from Fee Brothers, and in New Orleans you can also obtain it from Martin Wine Cellar or Vieux Carré Wine and Spirits.

Be EXTREMELY careful when adding orange flower water to this drink! It can very easily overwhelm, making the drink taste like perfume. You want a light, flowery touch, so no more than 3 or 4 drops.

2 ounces gin (Old Tom gin if you can get it)
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce lime juice
1 ounce simple syrup
3 small dashes orange flower water
2 drops vanilla extract (very optional; there’s some controversy over whether this was ever really used, but it does add a nice touch)
1 ounce cream
1 egg white
Soda water
Shake all ingredients except the soda water WITHOUT ICE very vigorously for at least one minute, preferably longer — the longer the better. Then add ice and shake for 1-2 minutes, as long as you can manage, until extremely cold and frothy. Strain into a tall thin glass, or a very large old fashioned glass, and top with soda water. Stir gently.

Opening just in time for the summer, Trust3 Hospitality is launching XVI, a bi‐level rooftop lounge located in the heart of midtown at 251 W. 48th Street, on the 16th floor of the Hilton Garden Inn. Trust3 is a fairly new company, but comprised of principals who have been behind some of the biggest hospitality ventures in recent memory, including Pink Elephant and Juliet Supperclub in NY, Todd English P.U.B. in Las Vegas and all F&B at the new Dream Hotel inMiami. With this sort of wrap sheet, giving XVI the identity of a midtown paradise was effortless. The venue features multiple indoor/outdoor bars, a gilded movie projection screen, LED candles atop giant tentacles, fireplaces and a lineup of renowned DJs.

Francois Frossard, the Miami nightlife designer behind Opium, Seminole Hard Rock, SET Miami Beach, Arkadia and Butter, delivered the unique aesthetic. The vision is consistent with Frossard’s signature style, infusing decadent glamour (such as stingray sofas in the style of Louis XVI), with whimsical elements (in this case, a 50ft wall covered in faux grass). Guests enter on 48th street and navigate a lengthy tunnel to reach the express elevator to the roof. Emerging from the lift, guests are given first view at a lavish midtown escape, replete with plush furniture, outdoor fire features and projection screens, all surrounded by a breathtaking view of Manhattan.
